  • Sparring or Kyorugi 겨루기 is a free form of competitive training that involves combat. Training to spar involves improving strength, conditioning, flexibility, mobility, technique, and strategy. Sparring is regulated by a set of rules, customs, and agreements that provide a safe environment for athletes to compete against each other.

  • Poomsae is the non-combative side of WT style Taekwondo. It involves learning a series of attack and defense movements called forms. In total, there are 8 forms of Taekwondo. Athletes can compete in Poomsae, but it’s also used to test rankings in Taekwondo. Training for Poomsae involves building the knowledge, skills, and muscle control to perform each form.

  • As we’re a university-affiliated RecSports club, our membership is restricted to currently enrolled UT students only (part time or graduate students welcome too!). However, for those interested in small group class for ages 12+, please reach out to Head Coach and Program Director Coach Joe Van here.

  • Our focus is on preparing our athletes for competition, so many practices will include sparring. We do emphasize safety for beginners, and for members committed to strengthening/conditioning we have additional practice times, but we strongly recommend trying out sparring! You’ll never find a tougher workout.

  • You don’t have to come to every practice. However, attendance is always encouraged, and the more practices you attend, the faster you’ll improve!

  • You don’t have to come to any tournaments. Many club members choose not to compete at all. However, for those serious about training, tournaments are the best way to develop focus and measure growth.

  • At Texas Taekwondo, we emphasize skill, ability, and conditioning over belt colors. We wear regular athletic clothes during practice and our coaches assign belts according to the individual’s level.

  • Yes! We regularly offer volunteering opportunities at the local food pantry and microfarm. We also run the Kicks 4 Kids program where volunteers introduce taekwondo to children at the UT Elementary Charter School.

  • The Recreational Sports Center is located at 2001 San Jacinto Blvd, Austin TX 78705. The best parking options are Brazos, Trinity, or Sana Jacinto Garages. For tournaments and scrimmages, accommodations will be made to allow building entry. Other visitors should contact the club in advance for parking and building entry.
